THE next best thing to visiting Tina and Colin Lewis's smallholding near Narberth, or taking a trip round the county, may be to view Tina's latest solo exhibition of paintings in Tenby. With humour and affection, Tina uses the subject matter close at hand. In her paintings, recently shorn sheep look slightly embarrassed and caught out, a 'gorgeous, but unintelligent' cockerel struts vainly through the stalks of runner beans, and mallards create reflected ripples on a winter pond. Humble scenes are transformed into something special by the artist, helping the viewer to see the possibility of beauty in everyday sights. Whilst producing work for a series of New Artists Cards, Tina 'tramped about with sketchbook and camera', seeking out Pembrokeshire's little gems. The paintings that resulted form a wildlife/landscape group as well as depictions of coastline, cliffs, castles, farmsteads and fields. Using both oil and watercolour/gouache, Tina has become enamoured with blues this year, and also 'mildly obsessed with patterns in nature - ripples, clouds and shadows, tiles and stones'. The exhibition shows the feel of Pembrokeshire rural life, with the odd botanical study and reclining nude thrown in, optimistic, observant, affordable and skillful. Already well-known for her paintings, and for mural work with her husband in schools and communities locally, Tina welcomes everybody to visit her exhibition at Art Matters Gallery, South Parade, Tenby, at the opening event tomorrow (Saturday) between 2 and 4.30 pm, or thereafter until Friday, May 27, daily except Wednesdays from 10 am to 5 pm.
