Sir, In connection with health services offered in Tenby, I made a doctors appointment at the Tenby surgery on Monday morning, which I queued for half-an-hour to get in the rain. I then waited for 1hr 10 minutes after my appointed time to see the doctor. I appreciate that the staff at the practice are working extremely hard and are doing their very best. There were only two GPs working on appointments, who also had a number of emergencies to deal with. I also witnessed a 92-year- lady who had a similar wait and whose carer had made the appointment for her by queing early in the morning, leave before seeing a GP. This seemed unfair, but when you later talk with holidaymakers who phoned an NHS Wales telephone number and are given appointments for that same morning when the surgery is already fully stretched, something just doesn't seem right. The holidaymaker was more than happy with the service they had received. Patients were phoning for appointments whilst I waited for mine and were being told the appointments had been taken. Concerns are local people who have a medical need will not be seen very quickly or will make the decision not to seek help. There needs to be provision for holidaymakers, this is not doubted, but hopefully not at the expense of residents in an already overstretched service? The demand on the surgery is only going to get greater.
