Amid the madness of cramming the end of season mid-week matches in, Pembrokeshire Football returned to a semblance of normality on Saturday as Merlins Bridge and Goodwick United played for the Senior Cup title.

Last year's beaten finalists, Merlins Bridge, started as firm favourites against the north Pembrokeshire outfit, yet apart from a brief period in the second half, they were on the back foot throughout as United played the conditions and the pitch better.

What works on your home patch, doesn't necessarily work on the Meadow as the Bridge tried to play a neat passing game against Goodwick's more direct approach.

Jay Brockway gave Goodwick a 1-0 interval lead, while the Bridge didn't have a sniff of goal through the first 45 minutes. They equalised in the second through a Peter Thomas penalty and there followed a period of Wizards dominance that resulted in one shot flying off the bar and another pushing just wide.

While it looked like they would gain the ascendancy, their heads quickly dropped when Goodwick were awarded a contentious penalty.

Given they reached the final after a penalty shoot-out in their previous two rounds, it was inevitable Nigel Delaney would score, and score he duly did.

The Bridge valiantly tried to claw their way back, but Goodwick were not giving an inch and they finally scored their third with about 10 minutes to go as Kieran O'Brien headed one home.

In league football played on the Friday prior to the final, Kilgetty may have gone down 5-1 away at Neyland, yet with other results going in their favour, they have avoided relegation as Monkton Swifts and Prendergast Villa go down into Division Two. Narberth entertained Pennar Robins and lost 2-0.

They made amends for this defeat on Monday as they put five past hapless Monkton Swifts, while conceding none. Matthew Lloyd and Richie Adams both scored twice, alongside a solitary score from Jordan Wilson.

Tenby travelled to Kilgetty as their hopes of finishing second remain intact and they used this motivation to defeat the home side 2-0. Tom Meiring and Jordan Richards scored for the visitors, who will be looking for more of the same in their remaining three games.

In the Second Division, St. Clears' hopes of promotion look dead and buried after they lost 2-1 at home to Camrose, yet on Monday they travelled away to play the same team and managed to win 5-1.

Pendine have secured some good results to give them a lifeline, but with five games to go, they still need to win another four to make their season safe and a 0-0 draw on Monday against Hundleton didn't do their hopes of staying in Division Two any good.

Saundersfoot could only manage a 0-0 draw away to Milford Athletic on Friday, yet they maintained their very slim chances of promotion on Monday by defeating Haverfordwest Cricket Club 4-1. Ross Gray showed his class with a well-taken hat-trick, with James Morgan scoring the other.

Had the Sports won on Friday, they would have been equal on points with second placed Hundleton, despite having played one game more.

Promotion looks unlikely for Daryl John and his team, yet given the topsy turvy nature of this year's Division Two campaign, you can't discount them until the proverbial larger lady finally decides to give us a tune.

Tuesday brought us some results too. In Division Three, Lawrenny drew 2-2 in their home clash with Broad Haven as Owen James scored both goals, while in Division Four it was the turn of Saundersfoot Seconds to play their counterparts from Camrose, but they went down 3-2, despite Carl Wainwright and Tom Davies finding the back of the net.

Finally, St. Florence look to be finishing the season on a high as they beat St. Ishmaels Seconds 3-1 away from home thanks to a goal by Scott Smith and an Ashley Smith brace.
