Local councillors have given the thumbs up for a ‘soapbox derby’ to be held in Tenby, which they have backed to be a roaring success.
The Soapbox derbies, where wacky racers battle it out in homemade carts, have been making something of a comeback across Pembrokeshire recently, with both Haverfordwest and Fishguard introducing the races to their town’s summer calendar of events.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, town clerk Andrew Davies told members that Tenby Round Table had indicated that they were looking to run the event on Sunday, June 11.
“Round Tablers believe that a soapbox derby would extend the events season in the town, but require some help to get if off the ground,” he said.
“The race would start at the top of Tudor Square and finish down by the Hope and Anchor, and take place between 11.30 am and 5.30 pm, with a road closure to be needed for the centre of the town.
“Hopefully it could become an annual event in Tenby, and part of a Grand Prix race circuit for Soapbox derbies in Pembrokeshire!” added Mr. Davies.
The Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that the town council would be happy to support the Round Table and help them in any way with this event.
