Saundersfoot’s ‘Cawl by the Sea’ event was one of the casualties of the weekend’s weather.

Due to the heavy snow, serious weather warnings and disruption to public transport and local services, Saturday’s Cawl Festival and the evening concert had to be cancelled.

Saunderfoot Chamber for Tourism (SCT) have thanked all their supporters, contributors to the event, the public and venues for all their understanding and hard work in the planning and preparation for the day, including FBM who sponsored the festival programme and the organisations that had planned to take part in the village showcase.

Special thanks have been given to the seven venues cooking cawl - The Boat House, the Regency Hall, Periwinkle, Beachside BBQ, the Salvage Bar, the Old Chemist Inn and The Marina.

The volunteer cooks at the Regency Hall donated their cawl to Brooklands Nursing Home, Saundersfoot, and this was enjoyed by the appreciative residents.

Members of the South Wales Gay Men’s Chorus were snowed in and very disappointed that they could not travel from Cardiff. Concert tickets will be refunded from where purchased, and an alternative date for a concert with SWGMC and Fiddlebox will be announced soon.

SCT chair, Phil Odley Jr, said: “I would like to thank everyone, including Sarah Whiddett who worked so hard by taking the lead in organising this popular event. It was disappointing that we had to cancel, but it was important to keep everyone safe.

“We look forward to seeing everyone at our Cawl Festival in 2019.”

• Collectors of the event’s commemorative cawl bowls will be pleased to know that the 2018 bowls are currently available to buy for £5 from Philly’s, Little & Large Lite Bites, Cliff House B & B and Dilys Photography Gallery in the village. The pottery bowls are sage green in colour with the words cawl etched on to the side and the date on the bottom.
