With a yellow warning for snow and ice in place and the ‘Pembrokeshire Dangler’ lurking - the Local Authority has said that gritters will be out across the county tonight (November 19) - as ‘Weatherman Walking’ Derek Brockway warns that locations ‘under the dangler can get hammered’
“Tonight road surface temperatures are forecast to dip below freezing across the county with a probability of sleet and snowfall, especially on the higher roads in the north east, although a slight covering is possible at all levels,” stated a spokesperson for Pembrokeshire County Council.
“Gusty winds may cause some drifting in exposed areas. We are therefore carrying out precautionary salting of the County’s primary routes this afternoon and evening and will patrol and plough these roads overnight.
“Road users are advised not to travel unless essential and to take care especially when travelling on untreated roads.”
BBC Wales meteorologist Derek Brockway said although the ‘Pembrokeshire Dangler’ sounds amusing, it is "actually a real thing".
"It's a persistent narrow band of heavy showers over the Irish Sea which often sits or dangles over Pembrokeshire," explained the man who hosts ‘Weatherman Walking’.
"It forms with a cold, northerly wind blowing across the relatively warmer sea.
"The air converges, forcing it to rise, forming towering clouds and frequent heavy showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow with a risk of thunder.
"While locations under the dangler can get hammered, places nearby only 10 miles away remain dry.
"Pembrokeshire Danglers are most common during the autumn and winter and can last for a few hours or a few days.
"In winter, they have been known to dump as much as 20cm (8in) of snow in places."
For the forecast for the next 24 hours, Pembrokeshire Council shared:
• A stream of showers in the Irish Sea is bringing sleet, hail and snow to Pembrokeshire. Although any potential snow fall will unlikely stick in Pembrokeshire during daylight hours, snow will start to stick through this evening and overnight into Thursday too, especially in the North East of the County.
• Snow accumulations are likely to be largest in the communities in and around the Preseli mountains of course, with 5-10cm or so building overnight in some places (although snow depths can be very variable as drifting will worsen situation). Even in lower parts of Pembrokeshire, particularly in the coastal towns of the south we could still see a notable coverage of snow by first light on Thursday morning – enough perhaps to mean a very difficult and slippery start to the day to many parts of Pembrokeshire tomorrow.
• There will be some further wintry showers of hail, sleet and snow during daylight hours on Thursday in west Wales, although as the day goes on the intensity of these showers will ease, and as the sun gets higher in the sky we should see any snow that has fallen at the lower elevations (where most people live and travel) thawing reasonably quickly, although it could still be quite wintry up in the Preseli mountains.
• Our highways teams have been pre-salting the primary network in the Northeast of the county and will be undertaking gritting focusing on our primary network. Ploughs will be installed to vehicles tonight where required especially as drifting may increase accumulation on the network over 200m.· Consideration for secondary routes gritting will be reviewed tomorrow based on the situation overnight.
• Community & Services: There are currently no planned school closures but update will be posted on our website and social media· Bro Preseli Day Centre will close early today and may be closed tomorrow.

During opening hours, our leisure centres are open if you need somewhere warm to stay· Pembrokeshire Community Hub remains open to anyone for advice and guidance during the cold weather.
