AN Aerospace Engineering student who has ambitions of one day building and flying his own aircraft, has celebrated his graduation from Swansea University.

Gethin Davies, aged 21, from Pembroke Dock graduated from the BEng Aerospace Engineering course in the School of Engineering with a 2:1 degree last week.

Gethin, who has a love for maths and science, first became interested in the Aerospace Engineering courses offered at Swansea University after reading about the X-43A hypersonic sramjet plane being developed by NASA.

He said: "Swansea University had a very good reputation for its Aerospace Engineering programme and when seeing its location adjacent to the beach and how close it was to the town centre, I knew that this was the place for me. On top of that I could always pop in at home for my Sunday roast!" Gethin, who is just completing a second summer placement with United Aerospace in Pembroke Dock in the engineering department working with composites and manufacturing target drones, airline seats, van mounted outside broadcasting satellite dishes, car components and wind turbines for export to the rest of the UK and Europe, now plans to return to Swansea University in the autumn for his Masters Degree in Research. He was joined at the ceremony by his proud parents, agricultural bank manager, David and learning support assistant, Eileen Davies. Programme director Dr. Hans Sienz said: "Gethin is a good example of the calibre of the students we are attracting at Swansea University and we are delighted to welcome him back for his Master's where he plans to do research in Power and Aerospace.

"The university currently offers Wales' only professionally accredited aerospace engineering degree scheme and we will continue to promote the strategic importance of aerospace within the wider science and technology industries across Wales and the rest of the UK."
