Plans for a skateboard park in Tenby have hit a brick wall after Pembrokeshire Coast National Park officers said that a number of issues could prevent work taking place on a proposed site in the town.
At Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, the town clerk told members that the environmental agency had given an assessment to National Park officers on the chances of developing a skate park on the Salterns site and explained that as the land was within a C2 flood zone, there would be a risk of flooding to any development.
"I take this explanation to basically say it's a no on this land then; it seems simple that they are saying the site isn't suitable," commented Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter.
"I say we try and progress with siting a skate park up by Greenhill School where it is safe and ideal for such a development for the youth of the town," she added.
The town's newly-installed Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Julie Evans, said that she would like to make a preliminary enquiry to see if a development could be achieved on land at the Butts Field Car Park, as she had spoken recently to a number of skateboarders who felt that this site could be suitable.
The town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies, said that local PCSOs had added to the debate by suggesting that land by the Battery Gardens seemed to tick all the right boxes.
"We need a firm plan to take forward to the county council and National Park officers before we can think about getting any further financing for this project," Mr. Davies told members.
"It would be a worthwhile exercise to meet with a group of local skateboarders and again ask them what they want. I feel we'd make greater progression on this project if a local skateboard group were to take the lead as they could also secure more funding," he continued, with the Mayor also stating that it would be beneficial to arrange a meeting with Planed to explore possible funding avenues.
