Sixty years on, a number of events are being held locally to commemorate Victory in Europe Day. In Tenby, the town's De Valence Pavilion will be turning back the clock 60 years, tonight (Friday), for the Mayor's Charity Ball to raise funds for START. Starting at 7.30 pm, the 'We'll Meet Again' ball, will feature the sounds of the 1940s, as performed by the 16-piece Carmarthen-based big band, 'The Merlinaires' and 1940s dress is also optional. "We are hoping that 'We'll Meet Again' will appeal to all ages," said the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane. "So many people met their partners at the De Valence, we hope that nostalgia will bring them back, while for younger people there will be the chance to experience a little bit of the past, particularly as we will also be having a demonstration of 1940s dances, like the jive and the jitterbug. Tickets priced £10, to include a free raffle, are available from the De Valence Pavilion, Four Seasons Florists, The Buccaneer and Dales Music. Meanwhile in Saundersfoot, people are being urged to hunt out all their war-time memorabilia and go down to The Regency Hall tonight (Friday), and reminisce and dance to the Glen Miller sounds of the '40s played by The Constellation Big Band. Organised by the Saundersfoot Chamber for Tourism, they have also persuaded those versatile American 'A' sisters to come out of retirement to also perform for the evening. Spam sandwiches and other war-time food will be available and a prize will be given to the best dressed war theme couple. As there are only limited tickets available, purchase them early to avoid disappointment on the night. Tickets, priced £5, are available from Frosts, Strand Antiques, Instrand and Philly's. Doors open 7 pm. Music and dancing from 8 pm until midnight. And in Carew, there will be a number of special services in the parish on Sunday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. As reported elsewhere in this issue, there will be a short service at the Carew War Memorial at 11 am for the laying of the British Legion wreath, followed by the Parish Ecumenical Services which will commence at 2.30 pm at the Carew Cheriton War Graves. This will be followed by a parade to the Carew Cheriton Control Tower, where a service of peace and thanksgiving take place. Meanwhile, in Narberth there will be a parade and service at St. Andrew's Church on Sunday evening.
