AN international singer is supporting a bid to save a Pembrokeshire country church from closure. John Mitchinson, a former head of vocal studies at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, whose singing career has taken him around the world, has agreed to perform at a concert to raise desperately needed funds for St. Petrox Church. Mr. Mitchinson now lives in Pembrokeshire and was keen to help when he heard that St. Petrox Church faced closure because of a funding crisis. Like many rural churches, a dwindling congregation means that the money it needs to keep going is not forthcoming from collections alone. The congregation of St. Petrox Church hit upon the idea of hosting a concert to meet the funding shortfall. Church treasurer Pat Russell said it was hoped that the event would raise over £1,500. "We are desperately trying to keep the church open, but to do that we need to raise funds,' he said. "This concert will appeal to everyone, whatever their musical taste, and promises to be a very enjoyable evening.' The concert will feature John Mitchinson as a soloist and The Menzin String Quartet, which includes violinists Rebecca Whitehurst and Joanne Underwood, James Walker on the viola and cellist Katina Andreou. Mr. Mitchinson, who will be accompanied by pianist Sharron Lusher, deputy principal of Pembrokeshire College, said the performers were hoping for a full house at the concert on Friday, October 5. "We are all pleased to give our services to help in the valiant efforts which are being made to repair and thus save this ancient church from closure,' he said. The concert at Monkton Priory Church will begin at 7.30 pm. Tickets costing £7.50 are available from Pembroke Bookshop or by telephoning 01646 689972.
