Learning Pembrokeshire provides a wide range of learning opportunities in a variety of settings throughout Pembrokeshire. Whether one is looking to develop one's skills to improve employment prospects; keep one's brain active; meet new friends or improve academic qualifications, the range of courses is impressive. It's never too late to learn, as demonstrated by the fact that many of our students are in their 80s, with some in their 90s. At the other end of the spectrum, we have students aged eight learning to play the guitar or developing their skills in arts and crafts class. Last year, speech and drama classes catered for students from the age of 11 through to 70. In fact, the external examiner from the London Academy Of Music and Drama Arts was very impressed with the mixed range of students - children, a pregnant woman, retired people, different nationalities, and with the individual content of the pieces presented for examination. She was particularly impressed that this was all being offered through community education and felt that it was possibly unique. Are you interested in joining a course, but worried? Don't know whether you will cope, or, if the course will be right for you? Don't think you can afford it? Will your physical disability prevent you from accessing the course? If any of these concerns are yours, then contact your local centre. Staff will be only too pleased to advise you and try to make it happen for you - even if the class is not at a convenient time or venue for you. If you want more information regarding the courses, then why not attend one of our open evenings on Monday, September 13, at Tenby Community Learning Centre, and on Tuesday, September 14, at Pembroke Dock Community Learning Centre, when tutors will be available to discuss and answer questions. Enrolment this year has been ongoing since mid-August and has been prolific, so don't delay, sign up today for a course right up your street.
Brush up on your basic skills!
The Community Basic Skills team provide a free service to people who want to 'Brush Up' on their reading, writing, spelling or maths. Perhaps you are contemplating studying for a GCSE, but are feeling a little rusty and want to brush up on the basics; perhaps you have put off doing an NVQ because you feel your presentation skills are not good enough - we can help. Perhaps you know someone who has severe needs and cannot read or write - we can help. All students have a confidential interview to ascertain their level of need and an individual learning plan is drawn up. Students work at a pace that suits them in a relaxed and friendly environment. These courses help boost confidence; provide the opportunity to gain qualifications and can improve one's prospects of employment or promotion at work. Earlier this year, the Basic Skills Agency recognised the standard of work being undertaken by Learning Pembrokeshire and awarded them the Quality Mark for their commitment to helping raise the standard of Basic Skills in Pembrokeshire.
