Last month, SI Tenby and District held a highly successful friendship supper at the Southcliff Hotel in aid of the Harriet Davis Trust. The club was delighted to welcome Elizabeth Sleight, fundraiser for the trust, as the guest speaker for the occasion. Elizabeth gave a detailed and often moving presentation about the work of the trust. Harriet Davis suffered from a rare degenerative metabolic disease. Seaside holidays, in the company of family and friends, were a source of great joy to her and to all who knew her. She died at the age of 11 years and the trust was established in 1992 as a tribute to her shining and indomitable spirit. The trust, which was founded in Harriet's name, is a registered charity and provides four properties which are specially constructed and equipped to enable disabled children, their families and carers to enjoy the benefits of seaside holidays. Elizabeth illustrated her presentation with a variety of pictures showing families and their disabled children enjoying holidays in Tenby, as well as a number of pictures of the four self-catering holiday houses in Pembrokeshire. One of the houses, situated in Penally, has an indoor heated swimming pool with hoist for pool entry. The fourth house, in Narberth, has been specially adapted for families with children with autism and other learning disabilities. 2014 is the trust's 21st anniversary and Elizabeth hopes to mark the occasion by holding a large number of fundraising events, initially to help towards the cost of refurbishing Harriet's House in Tenby Harbour, the first to be established. Afterwards, all enjoyed a delicious supper provided by club members. A considerable amount was raised for the trust through proceeds from the raffle and sale of tickets for the supper. The club would like to thank Elizabeth for giving such an informative and inspirational talk. Thanks are also extended to Pam and Brian for the generous use of the hotel for this event and helping to make the evening such a success. SI Tenby is holding another friendship evening on behalf of the Harriet Davis Trust on Tuesday, June 17, at 7 pm, in Church House, Tenby. This should be a fun evening and a buffet is available.
