The week of November 21 was the National Domestic Abuse Awareness Week, and Tenby Soroptimists had collected a large quantity of household items which included kitchenware, linen, bedding and kitchen equipment for the Pembrokeshire Women's Aid. They met with representatives from the latter to hand over the items on November 23. On Thursday, November 25, Mrs. Jean Thomas and Mrs. Wendy Bell represented the SI Club at a ceremony to launch the return of the Women's Aid title to Pembrokeshire. It had previously been the West Wales Women's Aid. Jean and Wendy took with them hampers for the mothers and children resident in the 'safe' house. Guest speaker for the event was Mrs. Marilyn Mason JP, and her talk began with congratulations to the Women's Aid team for the excellence of their work in the field of abuse. She was delighted that they were now to carry the county name and went on to illustrate the size of the problem nationwide, adding that Women's Aid, with some local specialist women's organisations, had been singled out by a leading academic in the field, as the only agencies getting it right! Pembrokeshire group was no exception. A 24-hour helpline allows victims to access emotional and practical support, and of course refuge. In the past, well-meaning organisations have worked in isolation, thus not communicating the vital part of the jigsaw. That should now be a thing of the past and Pembrokeshire can look forward to inter-agency teamwork with Women's Aid at the centre. She concluded by once again congratulating Sheila, Helen and all the members of staff, for their dedication and devotion, and wished them well in the future. A balloon launch, and a delicious buffet brought the event to a close.
