A local businessman has praised the actions of one of his neighbours and the emergency services after a blaze at his shop during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The fire at Squibbs Studios, Napleton House, Warren Street, was spotted by postman, Charles Clode, who lives opposite the shop, when he was on his way to work at approximately 4.15 am.
Mr. Clode raised the alarm and on arrival at the scene, the town's firefighters found the canopy that overhangs the front of the shop well alight.
The two crews extinguished the fire, but the canopy was completely destroyed and smoke damage was caused to the shop - which has been a photographers since 1860 - and flat above.
"If it had not been for the quick-thinking of Mr. Clode and the prompt and quick attention of the fire brigade who saved the day, it could have been a lot worse," owner, Mr. Graham Hughes told the Observer.
"We we lucky the fire did not get a grip, otherwise we could have lost the whole building," he continued.
"Fortunately, the flat was unoccupied at the time and as far as the shop is concerned, we are still able to be operational and are open for business."
Police are investigating the fire and are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them at the town's police station on 842303.
