Sir

As someone living in and around Tenby for many years, I am shocked that Tenby Town Council has accepted the South Pembrokeshire Hunt's request to meet in the town as part of the Winter Carnival festivities.

I became concerned when Mr. Simon Hart, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance and local Conservative party candidate, quoted in this paper when attending the South Pembrokeshire Hunt meeting in December 2007, "it was pleasing to know that the end of the Hunting Act was in sight and it would soon be confined to the dustbin of history."

As this Hunting Act gives protection to wildlife and also stops hunts blocking badger setts, it seems amazing that this town council wishes the hunt to be part of their winter carnival festivities.

I would like to congratulate Clr. Trisha Putwain in her efforts to protect the tourist trade and I hope Tenby will not in the future be seen as a town that encouraged an organisation which wanted to return to the age of the killing of wildlife for fun. What a sad day that would be.

Michael Sharratt MSc,

Whitland.
