Sir,
We constantly read how London's Mayor, Ken Livingstone, has introduced an anti-car policy which can gridlock the Capital and make life miserable for those who live and work there. I read with interest in the Daily Telegraph of November 12, an interview with the new chief executive of English Heritage, Simon Thurley.
Of Ken Livingstone's policy he says: "He's running London... no one around here can park any more... just so the tourists can skip across Trafalgar Square. London should be for Londoners first."
How refreshing! This brings to mind Pembrokeshire County Council's experimental pedestrianisation scheme for Tenby. Most residents trust that after recent consultations, where all but one local group voiced the opinion that concessions must be granted for residents and traders within Tenby's walls, the county council will honour local needs. After all, it is the locals, not the tourists, who give the town its ambience and who support its economy throughout the year.
Let us hope that Mr. Thurley's enlightened attitude will soon become fashionable.
