After the euphoria of last week's opening day win of the season, Tenby AFC suffered a setback at home to Monkton Swifts on Tuesday evening, going down 6 - 0 at The Clicketts. The first goal in this match was always going to be crucial and with Tenby conceding the opener after five minutes, they were always on the backfoot for the rest of the game. Monkton took the lead, however, after an uncharacteristic error from the home side's keeper Christian 'Sludger' Phillips from a corner, but although Tenby were always chasing the game after that, they never let their heads drop and kept battling against a very well organised Monkton line-up. Only some dicey decisions from the referee prevented Tenby from finding a way back into the game during the first half. Credit to the away side, though, who made their possession and experience count, showing some crisp passing and good forward play to go three up by half-time. Tenby came out in the second half determined to get back in the game and produced a fighting display, but at the same time playing some good football. Although they managed to create a few chances, the away side's keeper Craig Riordan never really looked troubled. Monkton killed the game off with their fourth goal and eventually grabbed two more in the last 10 miniutes of the match when Tenby legs were tired. Despite the heavy scoreline, Tenby showed good team spirit and will no doubt want to bounce back straight away in their next fixture. At no point were they overawed during the game against one of the stronger sides in the division. Tenby 'keeper 'Sludger' was superb in goal throughout the match, recovering well from his initial mistake for the opening goal. The back four of Terry Broadhurst, Ben Brooks, Johnny Badrock and Bobby Briers also competed well, but at times were overrun by Monkton's impressive forwards and midfield. Meanwhile, in centre of midfield, Jim Thomas and Simon 'Chiefy' Cole continued to try and play good passing football, with wingers Marcus Lyons and Ryan Lawrence also showing some neat touches. Up front, Jack Christopher and David Jones didn't get the supply they received in the previous game, but always looked a threat. Substitues Sam Edwards and Jamie Robinson tried to make an impact when they came off the bench, with the latter unsettling Monkton with his pace. Tenby's sponsors were Texaco and Digger's Sports Bar. Tenby AFC will face Herbrandston away tomorrow (Saturday) at 2.30 pm.
