The Rt Hon Stephen Crabb, Secretary of State for Wales and Simon Hart, Conservative PPC for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, visited LBS Builders Merchants Ltd - the biggest independent builders' merchant in the region - at its Pembroke Dock branch, on Tuesday, to hear how the sector is ensuring a strong economic outlook for Wales.

Mr. Crabb and Mr. Hart were met by Mark Davies, the managing director for LBS Builders Merchants, before taking a tour of the facility and meeting the rest of the team.

Amongst the issues discussed during the visit, included how builders' merchants provide specialist services and technical advice and support to the construction industry for new build, repair and maintenance as well as the importance of SME builders in maintaining and creating growth in the Welsh building market.

Mr, Davies also conveyed the importance of ensuring the flow of money within the building trade is maintained, particularly in regard to obtaining project and operating finance and tackling late payment.

Stephen Crabb commented: "Independent businesses such as the LBS Builders Merchants are integral to Wales' reinvigorated construction and housing industry; I'm delighted to see this independent company go from strength to strength, supporting the economy in the South West by providing over 200 jobs and continuing to invest in these staff through the British Merchants' Federation using innovative training and qualifications."

John Newcomb, managing director of the Builders' Merchants Federation (BMF), said: "LBS Builders Merchants is a prime example of how the industry is pivotal to maintaining a strong economy in Wales; the BMF is proud to have members such as LBS who are true job creators, giving young people the opportunity to gain specialist qualifications and training to ensure they offer the best possible advice and quality materials to their customers."
