A second new primary school has been officially opened inside a month by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Cleddau Reach VC Primary School, Llangwm, caters for 220 pupils aged three to 11.

Neyland Community School was officially opened by the authority on May 3.

Cleddau Reach follows the merger of Llangwm and Burton primary schools and replaces two former school buildings.

At a ceremony on Thursday (May 23), county council chairman, Arwyn Williams, said that, with the help of the Welsh Government, the Council had also opened two other new primary schools in the past 18 months - Ysgol Glannau Gwaun in Fishguard and Ysgol Ger-y-Llan in Letterston.

"This achievement demonstrates the council's commitment to ensuring our children reach their full potential and it is our duty to provide the best possible environment in which to learn," he added.

Work on the £4.5 million Cleddau Reach School began in December 2011 and was completed on schedule by construction firm Dawnus.

Designed in-house by the county council to a BREEAM excellent standard, the school features solar hot water panels, sprinklers and rainwater harvesting.

As well as infant and junior classrooms, the facility also includes an Early Years classroom block, kitchen, hall and music, IT and library rooms.

Headteacher Nick Groves said: "The children and staff are delighted with our wonderful new school. It provides a bright and well equipped building that is suited to the effective delivery of a modern skills based curriculum.

"During recent open evenings, parents and members of the local communities have been very impressed by the space and light within the building and the wide range of modern learning facilities available."

Chairman of governors Barry Childs added: "This is a truly wonderful and momentous day for all those connected with a project which will transform the learning experience of our children."
