A fine all-round team performance saw Tenby United secure their third successive victory as they comfortably defeated visiting Trimsaran on Saturday. The Seasiders outscored their Carmarthenshire visitors by three tries to one and with a little more composure could easily have added a couple more. But coach Gareth Thomas will be pleased with the progress that his young side is making, particularly the young threequarter line that is looking increasingly menacing as the season goes on. The early exchanges were a little scrappy, both sides becoming frustrated by match referee John Griffiths's frequent interventions for minor infringements. United soon began to stamp their authority on the match, however, the home eight winning some quality possession. At one such breakdown, the United were able to seize the ball just inside Trim territory in the centre of the field. Athletic lock Chris James popped up in midfield and was able to feed the ball out to Neil Powling, the centre finding himself with a little space on the flank. Powling showed his undoubted pace on the outside, showing good balance to cut inside the fullback before being tackled as he went over for a fine score. Stand-off Scott Mcloughlin added the extras to give the home side a seven-point lead. Having exploited the pace in their backline once, the Seasiders continued to probe the visiting defences out wide and stretched Trim on a number of occasions. The home pack built on this initiative and drove holes in the heart of the visiting defences. Trim were forced to concede a penalty in the shadow of their posts for holding on at a ruck. Mcloughlin duly converted to stretch the home lead to 10. The Seasiders continued to threaten Trim with their pace, Powling featuring again after the visitors had conceded possession in midfield. The centre again found space and put in a neat chip that sent the Trim threes backtracking. He appeared to be winning the race to the ball, but was beaten by the luck of the bounce as the ball rolled agonisingly into touch. United were quick to regain possession and looked set for another touchdown as they found themselves in front of the Trim posts just a few metres from the line. But the referee spotted an indiscretion from Tenby loosehead Scott Payne, penalising the prop and giving him 10 minutes in the sin bin. This failed to disrupt the home side who looked to move the ball wide with even greater regularity. The home crowd sensed another score was on the way and it was soon delivered. Excellent work from the hard-working Anthony Griffiths set up a great position in the visiting 22. Quick hands released burly fullback Alex Watt, who showed Trim a clean pair of heels to cross out wide. Mcloughlin was unable to add the conversion from wide on the right, but the Tenby coaching team will have been delighted to see their side go into the break with a 15-point cushion. Slightly less pleasing was the way in which the Seasiders allowed Trim to battle their way back into the match, their forwards looking to grind the young United pack down. The early stages of the second period saw sustained pressure on the home line as the visitors looked to battle their way over. Such was their eagerness to reduce the deficit, Trim were opting for scrums over penalties in the home 22, declining kicks at goal that would have opened their account. Their perseverance was rewarded, however, when Mr. Griffiths adjudged that the United had deliberately pulled down a rolling maul. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty try, with the conversion proving a formality. The coaching team decided to boost their front row, bringing on Lee Tucker to replace the battling Mark Brace. Trim were soon down to 14 temporarily after their hooker was yellow-carded for needlessly charging into a maul from the side, right in front of the referee. This seemed to galvanise the home side, who grasped the initiative and camped back down in the visiting 22. This time, the boot was on the other foot, as the United were awarded a penalty try of their own after taking the scrum option when the home side was penalised just a few metres from the whitewash. Mcloughlin gratefully added the two points to restore the 15-point gap. Tenby had a number of opportunities to put the game well beyond their opponents, Powling missing a long-range penalty and lock Chris James unluckily losing the ball over the Trim line. The visitors gave themselves hope with 10 minutes remaining, slotting over a penalty from just outside the home 22 to reduce the deficit to less than two scores. But the Seasiders played a sensible percentage game, keeping possession well and securing territory deep in the Trim half. Nippy scrum-half Andrew Davies made a sniping run and found replacement lock Gareth Edwards in excellent support. The United looked set for a fourth try before the Trim tigh- head cynically killed the ball and was given a yellow card for his trouble. Mcloughlin slotted over the penalty to seal victory. The United coaching team will look to build on this run of victories and will have been pleased with the discipline that the young side showed throughout. Neil Powling was named man-of-the-match, having posed a great threat to the visiting centre pairing and kept the home eight on the front foot with some raking touch finders.
