Under the recent Saundersfoot Harbour Empowerment Order (on October 1, 2011), updated provision was made for appointment of harbour commissioners, their liability and the way they do business.
The Order also modernised the Commissioners' powers to: manage and regulate the harbour, charge dues, control works and dredging and manage financial matters.
At the inaugural meeting of the new board on October 18, members elected Philip Evans, CBE, as chairman and Ted Sangster as vice-chairman.
The present team includes a number of other new commissioners.
Joining Philip and Ted are -Andrew Evans, Wendy Goldsworthy, Clr. David McDermott and Clr. Jim Codd.
Both Saundersfoor Community Council and Pembrokeshire County Council are represented with appointments of Clr. Rosemary Hayes, MBE, and Clr. Phil Baker, respectively.
The new chairman, Philip, is very enthusiastic about the opportunities this recent Order allows the Commission and welcomed the mix of experience and expertise of the board.
"Saundersfoot can now really develop into an iconic marine 'Safe Haven' for visiting boats and also provide the local community with leisure and commercial harbour facilities they can really be proud of," he said.
Saundersfoot Harbour operates as a Trust Port, an independent statutory body having a relationship with Welsh Government, but run by an independent board.
Trust ports are required to adhere to standards of independence, openness and accountability drawn up by the Department for Transport after widespread consultation with Trust ports, the wider industry and Welsh Government.
Philip confirmed the new board will fully meet the exacting standards set for trust ports.
"I look forward to working with the new commissioners in total openness and transparency," he stated.
The commissioners will also be assisted by an Advisory Group representing key stakeholders.
