LOCAL sculptor Perryn Butler is using the dramatic backdrop of Pembroke Castle to pass on her stone- carving skills to local people.

As part of the Pembroke 21C Community Association's Pembroke Story project which will link the proposed Pembroke Museum with the Town Trail, Perryn will be using examples of Mediaeval, Viking and Celtic sculpture as inspiration.

The workshops are just one element of the project which is involving schools and community groups in the town in preparation for a series of carved- stone reliefs that will tell the stories of Pembroke through the ages.

The work produced by all the groups will be displayed in an exhibition during the Pembroke Festival in early September.

"Involving the community in this important project will not only provide me with choices and inspiration for the stories I will depict, but also allows the community to enjoy ownership of the sculptures which will attract visitors to the town," said Perryn. "We hope to put Pembroke on the sculpture map of Great Britain!"

The workshops take place over the week beginning June 16 and spaces are still available for anyone over 16 with an interest in learning stone-carving skills. A charge will be made to cover the use of tools and the cost of stone.
