A ‘scruffy overgrown’ area of Saundersfoot will be improved thanks to a legacy left by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

Following on from the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, volunteers along with Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks Rangers planted 70 trees along with 120 hawthorn bushes at Saundersfoot village’s playing fields last month.

Thanks to the wishes of His Majesty The King, The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative was extended to the end of March 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant trees in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

County councillor for the seaside village’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams, who also helped out himself with the work, has praised the scheme.

“During March I joined a few hardy volunteers to work with National Park Rangers to plant 70 trees at Saundersfoot Sports Club in remembrance of the late Queen’s Golden Jubilee,” he explained.

“We also worked with Shrublands Caravan Park who share a boundary with the sports field. We planted over 120 Hawthorn bushes and cleared away considerable overgrowth that was a haven for rubbish.

“This area will look totally different when the hedge grows and will certainly give more privacy whilst also improving a scruffy overgrown area.

“I would like to thank all volunteers who assisted and the Royal Oak for providing coffees and delicious cake for all volunteers,” added Cllr Williams.
