Local community magazine Raring2go! has teamed up with Barrington's Garden Centre and The Greenfingers Appeal to bring the 'Sponsor a Sunflower' challenge to Pembrokeshire schools. Using the schools pack and seeds provided, children can grow sunflowers at school or at home and obtain sponsorship from friends and family for each centimetre grown. The Greenfingers Appeal is designed to raise money for UK hospices to build gardens for the enjoyment of terminally ill children. Scheme administrator Chris Stevens said: "If we can build up to 10 gardens a year, we can help many more life-limited children and their families. With your help we can add life to days when days cannot be added to life." Any sponsor monies raised are split 50-50 between the school and The Greenfingers Appeal. The competition is open to all UK schools and the school raising the most money will win gardening prizes worth £500. Local garden centre Barrington's at Slade Cross, Cosheston, has offered to provide compost and pots to the first five schools who get involved and Raring2go! have a limited number of sessions available to assist participating schools in implementing the lesson plans in the schools pack. Look out for details in the spring issue of Raring2go! or telephone 016466 80159 for your school to receive a pack.
