Schoolchildrens' studies in Pembrokeshire are set for a breath of fresh air.

Ten schools are developing their school grounds, thanks to Land for Learning grants distributed by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Each school has been awarded £1,000 to spend on various sustainable development and biodiversity conservation schemes.

"Pupils will be able to have outdoor classrooms in the form of quiet reading areas, nature gardens, solar technology demonstrations, vegetable plots and sensory gardens," said Pembrokeshire County Councillor John Davies, cabinet member for children and young people.

"These are among several projects designed with the help of pupils."

The grants have been awarded to Greenhill School in Tenby and Pembroke School, together with primary schools in Lamphey, Stepaside, Neyland, Hakin, Pembroke (Golden Grove), Pembroke Dock (St. Mary's), Wiston (St. Aidan's), and Croesgoch.

But it's not just curriculum teaching which is being enhanced through grounds development.

Wildflower meadows, hazel copses, hedges for making dens, seating areas and play structures made from local timber are also planned.

The aim is to inject extra interest and fun into playtime, and to enhance the whole school outdoor environment.

Residents of East Williamston and Tavernspite will also get the chance to improve and enjoy their environment - and develop stronger links with local schools - thanks to £5,000 each from Community Land for Learning grants.

The Pembrokeshire Land for Learning Project is a three-year partnership project involving Pembrokeshire County Council, members of the Pembrokeshire Biodiversity Partnership (Project Officer, Prince's Trust, Wildlife Trust, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Forestry Commission, Countryside Council for Wales) and the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

The project is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government Sustainable Development Fund - administered by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority - as well as the Countryside Council for Wales and the Forestry Commission.
