Tenby's four schools will be competing for the best display of daffodils next spring and to be the first winners of Denzil's Daffodil Trophy.
The new competition, which is being held in memory of former Mayor, Denzil Griffiths, who passed away in January 2006, will commemorate his love of the Tenby daffodil and remember his enthusiasm for the planting of thousands of the yellow flowers in the town.
Tenby in Bloom - who are spearheading the event - have presented Tenby Infants and Juniors, St. Teilo's and Greenhill with daffodil bulbs for them to plant and grow over the winter to create a colourful display in their grounds.
The bulbs were purchased with money raised by the committee at Tenby Round Table's two Summer Spectaculars, while a trophy has been presented by Denzil's family, who will also be on hand to help judge the winner.
"We would like to thank Tenby Round Table for allowing us to fund-raise at the two spectaculars and also Denzil's family for donating the trophy," said Bloom chairman, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.
The Bloom committee have also donated 1,000 snowdrop bulbs to be planted in the grounds of St. Mary's Church.
Speaking at Tuesday night's meeting of the town council, Clr. Lane said that the hanging basket scheme introduced this year had been successful, with 20 new businesses taking part, and she hoped more would get involved next year.
