Town councillors have reassured residents of Tenby's Serpentine Road and parents of children who attend the two schools in Heywood Lane, that ways are being sought to alleviate parking and traffic problems in the area.

Following the previous meeting of the council when the matter was discussed, Clr. Mrs. Sandra Williams told her colleagues on Tuesday night that a number of concerned parents had spoken to her on the matter, believing that the real issue surrounding Serpentine Road would get ignored if the situation was just passed along to the Safe Routes in the Community scheme to deal with.

Emma Gertman, who, along with other parents, formed the Tenby Infants Traffic Group Committee over a year ago to try and address traffic issues along the route, briefly spoke to councillors at the meeting.

"We need a solution to the traffic problems; the problem is only going to get worse," she said.

"We have three schools in close proximity, which should probably never have happened. It's caused many traffic and parking issues and sometimes motorists triple park there.

"We can move the problems around, but it doesn't alleviate the matter long term," added Emma,

Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that the council had not passed the problem onto the Safe Routes committee at the last meeting when they were discussing Serpentine Road, but that certain aspects of their scheme were felt to be crossing over into councillors' discussions, and that they didn't want to step on anyone's toes.

She felt that the chairman of the Safe Routes committee should be invited to talk with councillors to show what they had achieved already and if there was anything specific that the council could add their weight to.

Deputy Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter, also explained that councillors had had a site meeting with the county council's traffic manager, Mr. John Price, to discuss ways of solving the problem, but it was something that had been around for years and had never been properly addressed.

Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown also felt that it would be a good idea to bring representatives of the three schools around the council table, along with the local AM, to have a meeting with the town council.
