The fourth Annual Huw Lewis Memorial Six-a-side football tournament will be held on Sunday, May 28, at the Kingsmoor sports ground, Kilgetty. Huw, who was an excellent all round sportsman played football and cricket for both Kilgetty and for Pembrokeshire as a youth. Later, he went on to play semi-professional football, but died prematurely of an undetected heart condition whilst playing football in Saudi Arabia on October 21, 2002. He was 32-years-old. Following Huw's death, his friends and teammates from Kilgetty decided to organise a six-a-side football tournament in his memory. The previous three tournaments have been very successful and have raised several thousand pounds on behalf of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), which deals with the condition that affected Huw. As a result of funds raised to date, this year CRY have arranged to host a free screening event at the Kilgetty clubhouse on the weekend of the tournament. This screening will enable up to 80 individuals between the ages 14-35 to be given a simple, painless electrocardiogram (ECG) test that will enable any potential cardiac problems to be identified. The CRY team is planning to run this screening on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, at the Kilgetty club. The event will be run by specially trained staff from CRY who will be available all weekend to answer any queries people may have about cardiac risk in the young. Initially, it is planned that priority for screening will be given to individuals taking part in the tournament. However, the organisers are keen to encourage anyone who wishes to receive this free screening to attend as there may be an opportunity to be tested. Huw's brother, Jonny Lewis, said: "A lot of hard work has been undertaken by the organisers to raise the monies for this event and we are committed to making it a success."
