Pembroke Dock Skater Group, who are a group of young people keen on skating and boarding, have recently affiliated with Pembroke Dock Youth Centre and, under the direction of the youth centre manager Matt Done, will be undertaking a marathon 12-hour sponsored skate-a-thon at the Youth Centre, Bush Street, from 10 am until 10 pm on Wednesday, October 26.
This event is also supported by Pembroke Dock's Neighbourhood Policing Team, who recently wrote to Pembrokeshire County Council in support of a skate park for the town's Memorial Park.
The aim of this event is to raise awareness and money to build a skate park in Pembroke Dock's Memorial Park.
Pembrokeshire County Council has recently approved planning for a skate park, but funding needs to be raised in order to start work.
The young people of Pembroke Dock, who are eagerly awaiting such a facility, have decided to help things along by taking it upon themselves to join in with the fundraising, although they do realise that the amount of money needed is high and will take some time to achieve.
Nevertheless, the youngsters are committed to helping to fund a skate park and have come up with the idea of a sponsored skate-a-thon, which is being organised with the help of Matt Done, PCC Youth Services.
All skaters will be looking for sponsorship and will be providing a display of routines and tricks throughout the 12-hour period and hope to raise as much money as possible to be presented to the skate park fund.
Spectators of all ages are welcomed throughout the day and evening and refreshments such as hotdogs and drinks will be on sale, the proceeds of which will also go towards the fund.
The skaters have already been given an overwhelming amount of support by local community groups and businesses, who have provided donations for refreshments to keep the youngsters going all day and into the night!
A special thanks to BAPTARA, ENCOMPASS, Bufferland and Pennar Residents' Association and Pembroke Dock Royal Navy Association for their generous support for the youngsters of the community; it is greatly appreciated and will help keep the skaters fed and watered throughout the 12-hour session.
If anyone is interested in taking part in the skate-a-thon, please contact Matt Done at Pembroke Dock Youth Centre or their Facebook page.
Anyone wishing to go along to support the fundraising and join in the fun on the October 26 will be warmly welcomed.
