On December 11, representatives of Save Saundersfoot Coal Office Campaign attended the monthly meeting of Saundersfoot Community Council (SCC). One of the items under discussion was Pembrokeshire County Council (PCC) and Saundersfoot Harbour Commission's (SHC) joint regeneration programme for the harbour area.

At the meeting, the chairman informed members of the council that he had spoken with the chairman of SHC and due to the level of opposition, which exists not only within the community but also from visitors to the village, the Harbour Commission would not be supporting the proposal currently being considered to demolish the Coal Office and its adjoining gardens.

Correspondence had also been received from supporters of the campaign, requesting a deputation of three or four community councillors meet with both Martin White, head of regeneration for PCC, and Rob Scourfield, conservation officer for PCNPA, to inform both authorities of the strength of opposition which exists.

SCC resolved to arrange a meeting with both authorities which will be attended by a deputation of four community councillors and Maryellen Doyle, a spokesperson for Save Saundersfoot Coal Office campaign.

Both these points are encouraging news and would not have been achieved without the strength of support given to the campaign. Our Facebook page now stands at 1,062 and through their newspaper, Tenby Observer, have kindly allowed us to update members of the community who do not have access to Facebook.

We understand that planning consultants, The Urbanists, may no longer be involved with the regeneration programme. However, as far as supporters are aware, PCC are still considering the proposal for demolition. The campaign therefore needs to remain strong and vocal until PCC announces that they have also abandoned the proposal to demolish the Coal Office and its adjoining gardens.

The campaign now aims to raise an e-petition, to send to PCC before the meeting is scheduled to take place, to emphasise supporters' objections. We would ask everyone to support the petition. We also aim to raise a manual petition for those unable to access our Facebook page.
