In 2026, Saundersfoot will host the 40th New Year’s Day Charity Swim, the UK's largest festive dip, celebrating decades of tradition and charity fundraising with a ruby theme.
On January 1, the organisers of the charity event will proudly host the 40th New Year’s Day Swim – a remarkable milestone for this iconic community event.
The 2026 swim will start at 12.30pm from Saundersfoot beach, and is sure once again to attract a wealth of entrants and support.
What began over Christmas in 1984 with just 10 brave swimmers has grown into the UK’s largest festive dip. From 1986 onwards, the swim became a permanent New Year’s Day tradition.
Apart from 2020 and 2021, when the event was cancelled due to Covid restrictions, the swim has taken place every year since.
Over the years, the event has raised more than £800,000 for charities, thanks to the dedication and generosity of participants, sponsors, and volunteers.
A spokesperson for Saundersfoot Festivities, organisers of the event said: “In 2025, we saw a record-breaking 2,535 registered swimmers and an estimated crowd of 9,000 spectators.
“Recognised by Pembrokeshire County Council as a major event, the swim has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charities over the years and has become one of Saundersfoot’s most cherished traditions.
“To mark the 40th swim milestone, the theme is ruby. While it may not be a wedding anniversary, Saundersfoot and the Swim certainly feel like a perfect partnership – and reaching 40 swims deserves a truly sparkling celebration.
“We encourage swimmers and supporters alike to embrace the theme and bring the village to life in a sea of ruby-red costumes and creativity.
“Join us for what promises to be an unforgettable New Year’s Day in Saundersfoot – and help us celebrate 40 swims of community, charity, and tradition,” they added.
All registered swimmers will receive a special 40th ruby-themed medal, and a new range of official NYDS merchandise will be available soon.
Registration fees are £5 for adults and £3 for under-16s.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our NYDS rugby shirt sponsors who support us year after year and help us raise funds for the event,” continued the spokesperson.
“This incredible event can only happen with the continued support of our sponsors, event partners, volunteers, and of course, the brave people who take the plunge each New Year’s Day.
“Whether you’re fundraising for a cause close to your heart, joining in fancy dress, or simply coming along to cheer from the beach – you’ll be part of an unforgettable community celebration!
