The benefits of the Saundersfoot Triathlon have been highlighted by a local county councillor - who has said that the event continues to thrive and inspire community participation.

The Saundersfoot Triathlon has grown rapidly over recent years and now serves as an important precursor to the main sporting event on Pembrokeshire’s calendar - Ironman Wales.

County councillor for the seaside village’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams said: “Saundersfoot provides an ideal location for triathlon events, offering a stunning coastal setting, a strong sense of community, and excellent local facilities.

“These factors have undoubtedly contributed to the continued success and popularity of the event.

“Many local residents view the Saundersfoot Triathlon as the perfect opportunity to test their abilities ahead of tackling longer-distance challenges such as Ironman. The event has inspired participation at every level, encouraging local people to take up sport, improve their fitness, and engage more actively with community life.”

Each year, in September, Saundersfoot Harbour and the main beach are transformed into a vibrant arena for athletes and supporters alike; with around 900 competitors entering the sea to complete the swim section before transitioning onto their bikes and riding from the harbour through the village.

“Throughout the day, the village is filled with spectators, music, and celebration. Local hospitality venues play a key role, providing live entertainment and refreshments, which adds to the sense of occasion and community pride,” continued Cllr Williams.

“I would like to commend the event organisers for addressing the concerns raised by athletes and spectators following the 2024 event. This year’s introduction of full road closures on The Strand, Cambrian Terrace, High Street, and Wogan Terrace has greatly improved safety and reduced vehicle movement through the village during the race.

“The feedback from competitors, residents, and businesses has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the safer and more enjoyable atmosphere created as a result.

“The event undoubtedly brings a significant influx of visitors into the village, with thousands arriving to either compete, support, or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

“The economic benefits are equally clear, hospitality venues, local shops, and accommodation providers all report strong trade during the triathlon weekend. Importantly, hosting the event on a Friday evening, has extended business hours and had a measurable positive impact on local trade, supporting the objective of encouraging out-of-season activity within the community.”

However, while the benefits are considerable, there remain a few logistical challenges to address, with parking continuing to be an ongoing concern.

“Looking ahead, I am hopeful that by working collaboratively, we can explore solutions to minimise disruption, with the potential inclusion of additional road closures to include Brewery Terrace,” explained Cllr Williams.

“This measure, raised by competitors, marshals and their families, would further enhance safety and discussions have already started on how the relevant bodies to find a suitable and workable solution.

“I remain fully supportive of this event and will continue to work with Pembrokeshire County Council, local residents and the event organisers to ensure it continues to grow safely, successfully, and harmoniously alongside the needs of our residents.”
