The Saundersfoot Strollers are constantly picking up people’s rubbish left on our beaches, grass verges, footpaths etc; but one of the Strollers, Sue Townsend from Stepaside, set herself a daily challenge last week.
On her daily walk, Sue picked up litter from the roadside near to her home and took it home and after a week was absolutely staggered by the amount of rubbish she had collected by patrolling the same area on a daily basis:
Sue said: “Ninety per cent of the rubbish, I felt, was from cars as daily I picked up food wrappers, cans and bottles from the kerb-side.
“Lots of people stopped and asked what I was doing and they all felt it was good to see the village litter-free, for a while!
“One man said he had seen people in cars drive up the lane to throw bags of recycled rubbish away!
“The amount I collected in one week suprised me, as I had not realised how many sweet wrappers and crisp packets were all made from plastic materials, so will not ever rot away.
“I will continue to carry a bag with me on my walks; how can I ever stop. If we all did just the bit outside our own homes, it would help a village or street stay cleaner.”
Maybe everyone should take Sue’s message on board - have a plastic bag in your pocket when you go out and pick up some rubbish and maybe those guilty of throwing their rubbish on our streets, beaches and roads will get the message.
