Hebron Baptist Church
Last Sunday, Mr. Anthony Standing gave a warm welcome and the announcements for the coming week. The visiting speaker, Rev. Terry Broadhurst, led the Act of Remembrance and later read from Matthew 5 v 1-16. The musicians were Miss Helen Standing (piano), Rebekah Chatwin (flute) and Tom Kidney (viola). The welcome steward was Mrs. Janet Roberts.
In his talk with the young people, Rev. Broadhurst spoke about embarrassing moments, something we all experience at one time or another. Later we may see a comical side to the incident, but that doesn't lessen our discomfort at the time.
Rev. Braodhurst spoke about a school incident when he was made to feel acutely uncomfortable by the pointing and giggles of his school mates. As followers of Christ, we should always be concerned to help and support our friends, especially if they are going through a difficult time. We have to remember to treat them as we would wish to be treated ourselves in a difficult situation.
The theme for the message was 'Kingdom Mission'. The people of Israel were looking for and waiting for the Messiah, but Jesus had to demonstrate that He was the long-awaited Saviour.
He had a purpose in coming to the earth, to share the love of God with others. Yet it is not just what we say, but how we treat others that shows the love of God. His love should usually be evident by happiness in our lives and even in times of sadness and struggle we should generally feel blessed and with a sense of purpose.
Even though there will be times in life when we feel under pressure from others, we can trust God to get us through the situation. The believer can always look forward to a better time ahead.
Rev Broadhurst read a description of God written by an eight-year-old boy. He said God is with us all the time, even when our parents are not. He is there to talk to and to help us when we feel scared or uncertain.
We can see God's love in others, sometimes in unexpected times and places. A woman who was living rough on the streets and was rather unkempt offered a passer-by a drink of coffee. Because of her appearance, her offer was refused and the man walked by, but then realised that the offered drink was probably the only warm drink the woman had enjoyed that day. He turned back and asked her why she had wanted to share her coffee. She replied: "It tasted so good that I just wanted to share it with someone."
Are we like this? Do we enjoy the blessings of God so much that we want to share God's love with others, not just by what we say, but with practical support and kindness?
The Kingdom of God has arrived! Can you see it?
This Sunday at 11 am the speaker will be Mrs. LaDonna Mallams. The young people will have activities in the hall during the message. Tuesday Club will meet at the Poppies at 6 pm.
