Cricket: The weekend saw mixed fortunes for the Saundersfoot teams. On Friday, the Second XI were in action against Hundleton Seconds in the Alec Colley Cup. Winning the toss, Saundersfoot chose to bat and began well, with Roger Stanford (30) and Richard Thomas (15) adding 54 for the first wicket. The momentum was carried on by Paul Morris and Paul Brooks (46) and with a quickfire 30 from Yannick Parker at the end of the innings Saundersfoot amassed a target of 146 for the Hundleton batsmen. Hundleton lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked like reaching their target, but some wayward bowling saw 39 extras, which helped Hundleton to score 115 for 8 in their alloted overs, which saw Saundersfoot win by 31 runs. On Saturday, the First XI went to Hook looking to secure a win. However, it was a day when the toss would decide the game. Saundersfoot lost the toss and on a damp wicket struggled to 121 for 9 in their 45 overs. Mike Franklin (24) was the highest scorer, which included a rare six from him. Ian Poole (18), James Caine (22) and Paul Morris (11) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. This score was never going to be enough and batting on a drying out wicket, Hook passed the total for the loss of seven wickets, with Danny Caine taking 3-35 and Chris Parker 4-37. The Second XI were at home to Hook Second XI and comfortably beat their visitors by eight wickets. Tight bowling on behalf of the Saundersfoot bowlers restricted Hook to 77 all out, with wickets falling to Grant Hardy 5-25, Chris Williams 2-16 and Richard Thomas 1-24. There were two run- outs effected by excellent throws from Sam Butler and Cory Morris. Mention must be made of the tight spells of bowling from 12-year-old Sam Butler and 13-year- old Sam Franklin. The Saunderfoot reply saw miserly bowling from the Hundleton bowlers. Roger Stanford and Sam Franklin added 24 for the first wicket. Richard Thomas (18), Toby Smith (18 no) and Roger Stanford 32 not out saw the Saundersfoot team past the winning post for the loss of two wickets against a side who were top of the division.
