SAUNDERSFOOT SPORTS 5 HUNDLETON 2

After drawing their previous two outings, Saundersfoot got back to winning ways on Saturday by seeing off a spirited Hundleton side 5-2 at the King George V playing fields. With the weather conditions wet for the first time this season, the pitch suited Sports' attacking football and they took the lead after 20 minutes when some good work from winger Ross Gray and striker Rob Colley set up Tom Spencer for the opening goal. Hundleton found their way back into the match soon after, taking advantage of some sloppy defending from the home side, with Simon Shanahan slotting the ball into the net. Sports nearly re-took the lead when Colley was brought down in the visitors' box, but after picking himself up to take the penalty kick, he saw his shot pushed wide by the 'keeper. However, Saundersfoot went in front following a good spell of pressure which resulted in Spencer's half volley from a Laurence 'Loz' Rogers corner finding the back of the net. The home side increased their lead when captain Paul Evans chipped a ball over the Hundleton defence into the path of Gray, who made no mistake with the finish. After the break, Saundersfoot had numerous chances to put the game to rest, with central midfielders Evans and Delan Umanee going closest, both seeing their long range strikes come back off the woodwork. With 20 minutes to go, Hundleton handed themselves a lifeline when Shanahan got beyond the home side's defence to finish for his second and keep the game alive. Saundersfoot gave themselves some breathing space, though, with 10 minutes to go, when some tricky wing play from Gray on the left allowed him to cross for Rob Colley to sneak in at the back post and grab a deserved goal. Centre back Mike Cornick nearly put the result safe when his curling shot from outside the box narrowly went wide. The three points were finally sealed when Colley was once again fouled in the Hundleton box and this time Spencer took the spot kick to give him his hat-trick and Sports a well-earned 5-2 win. Once again Richard Thomas in goal and the Saundersfoot back four proved a tough defence to breach, while the midfield, wingers and strikers played some open, attacking football going forward, creating plenty of chances. Referee Andrew Davies enjoyed a good game, with both sides playing the match in a fair spirit. Tomorrow (Saturday) sees a break from the league for Saundersfoot Sports 2nds when they take on St. Ishmaels in the first round of the Reserve Cup at King George V playing fields, with kick-off at 2 pm.
