Two matches to catch up on. The 12-hour rover on June 14/15, sponsored by A. J. Collins Developments Ltd., was a keenly fought contest, with 17 anglers competing and 14 bringing fish to the scales. Winner was Ben Edwards with a Thornback Ray of 1.82kg (10 points, trophy and £100); second was Tony O'Neil with a bag of 2.93kg (eight points and £50); third was Anthony Knowles with a bag of 2.54kg (six points and £20); and joint fourth were Tony Ormond and Rob Collins with bags of 1.53kg (four points each). Last Sunday should have been a Pendine match, but with 35mph south-westerly winds, the match was amended to a beach rover - nobody elected to stay at Pendine! The match included the annual doubles competition, drawn on the day and sponsored by Ernie, of Saundersfoot Angling Centre. Anglers tried beaches from Morfa Bychan to Freshwater East, the only species being weighed in being scabby Dogfish, though a number of undersized Bass were also caught. Match winner was Jon Brace with a Dogfish of 830g (10 points and £50); second was a new junior to the club, Liam Marklew, with a bag of 1.36kg (eight points and £20); third was Rob Beynon with a bag of 1.14kg (six points and £10); and fourth was Ian Ratcliffe (four points). The winning doubles team was Jon Brace and Rob Beynon - being the only team where both members weighed in! £100 between them, on top of the match prize - have a good holiday, Jon! Golden Peg drawn was that of Dai Lewis, who didn't fish. Next matches: Saturday, July 12 - Caldey Cup, sponsored by Argosy Resaurant, Saundersfoot. Meet at the Castle Beach slip at 9 am to catch the first boat to the island, finishing time will be by about 4 pm. Usual Caldey Cup rules apply. Sunday, July 20 - six-hour rover. Leave the Sports Club at 1 pm, fishing 2 - 8 pm, with the scales closing at The Captain's Table at 9 pm prompt. Specimen match - excluding mini species! August - boat match over several weekends, running out of Milford Haven. Please provide your names and when you are available to Carl Gunning. Current leaderboard: 1. Rob Beynon 43 pts; 2. Rob Collins 41; equal 3. Anthony Knowles and Jon Brace 39; 5. George Barritt 32. No meeting next month as the August match is arranged. Next meeting is on the first Wednesday of August at the Sports Club at 8 pm. May I thank all those who turned up for the last meeting - great to have your support.
