Members of Saundersfoot Sea Angling Club fished Ginst, Pendine and Morfa Bychan on Sunday in an excellent contest, which was sponsored by Roy Morrell, of Pembrokeshire Scaffolding. Thirteen anglers competed and 10 weighed in a mixture of bass, flounder and dogfish. It proved to be an interesting day as soon as the anglers reached Pendine. They had been told that they could not drive onto the sands as there was to be no ranger cover, but a ranger was on duty on the day. It transpired that BBC Wales were filming Derek Brockway learning how to use a sand yacht, or some such thing, so they were allowed on the beach and most of them settled in beyond the sticks. Then, on the way home, Jon Brace was leading the convoy back to Saundersfoot for the weigh-in when he indicated left to pull in on the hill leading down to Wiseman's Bridge. Who is he dropping off here, everyone wondered? His nearside rear wheel then dropped off his van, bounced into the hedge and spun to a stop. A bewildered Jon got out and said it wasn't his fault as he changed the wheel the day before due to a puncture! Anyway, the wheel was replaced, but we got back to the weigh-in after the 3 pm deadline, so sincere apologies to Roy Morrell, who had his own commitments and was unable to have his photograph taken with the winner of the Pembrokeshire Scaffolding Tankard. Results: 1. George Barritt with a bass of 1.90kg (10 points and £100); 2. Tony O'Neill with a bag of 3.36kg (eight points and £50); 3. James Canton with a bag of 3.30kg (six points and £20); 4. Rob Collins with a bag of 2.50kg (four points). Golden Peg was James Canton, who didn't invest his 50p. The pot now stands at about £170. The next SSAC matches are: Sunday, June 3 - six- hour rover (sign on 1.15 - 1.30 pm at the Sports Club, fishing 2.30 - 8.30 pm, weigh-in at the Captain's Table, with scales closing at 9.30 pm prompt - first prize is a Power Storm rod rest worth £125, donated by Keith and Michelle, of Tenby Angling); Sunday June 17 - six-hour rover, sponsored by Jane Tucker, of The Argosy, Saundersfoot (sign on at the Sports Club 1.45 - 2 pm, fishing 3 - 9 pm, weigh-in venue to be confirmed, with the scales closing at 10 pm prompt - £100 first prize, £50 second. This is also the first match of the second round of the Singles Knockout). After the completion of the first round, the next round is - Ben Edwards v Wayne Williams: Kiefer Thompson v Mel Matthews: Rob Collins v Jon Brace: and James Canton has a bye if he fishes the first or second match. Leaderboard after 10 matches: 1. James Canton 61 pts; 2. Rob Collins 33; 3. Wayne Williams 28; 4. Tony O'Neill 26; 5. Liam Ridgway 25. Mover of the week is George Barritt, who moves from 19th spot to eighth and threatens to qualify for next year's Singles KO. The next SSAC meeting is at the Sports Club on Wednesday, June 6, at 8 pm. If anyone has ideas about venues, sponsors etc - please discuss them at the meeting.
