A small town in Sri Lanka left devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami disaster has received a major boost thanks to the fund-raising activities of pupils at Saundersfoot CP School. They collected the magnificent sum of £1,710 towards the START - Srilankan Trust to Aid and Rebuild Tangalle - fund which was set-up by local solicitor Paul Cowper and his wife Jane, who were holidaying in the resort at the time when the tidal wave struck. Paul and Jane were present at the school's assembly last Friday, when pupils were able to hear the couple's account of what happened to them and the town of Tangalle when the disaster struck. While Paul told pupils how the homes and schools in the small Sri Lankan town were completely destroyed by the tidal wave, Jane showed photos of how the resort looked before and after the disaster. After the talk, the couple were presented with a cheque from the school for START to help with the rebuilding of the community there. The cheque was presented to Paul and Jane by Year 6 pupils Catherine Hare and Jade Hicks, who raised £650 for the fund by holding a jumble sale in Saundersfoot's Regency Hall. A special assembly was also held in memory of the victims of the disaster, and pupils and staff took part in more fund-raising activities for START making the grand total of £1,710. Paul and Jane, were full of praise for the charitable efforts of everyone involved at the school. "We're very impressed and grateful with what you've done to raise this unbelievable amount of money, and with the cost of rebuilding one home in Tangalle around £400, the fund-raising efforts will certainly make a huge difference to the town's community," said Paul.
