Solo Training Day

The 'Solo' may be a 50-year-old design, but it remains a very practical choice for the single- handed sailor. There is a growing contingent of 'The Solo Boys' at Saundersfoot and round the corner at Tenby SC, all, no doubt hoping to emulate Robert Fiske-Moore's feat in bringing his Solo into fourth place overall at the 2006 Coppet Week Regatta. Full marks to the enterprise of the Solo Class Association, who offer expert advice to any club willing to lay on a 'Solo Training Day'. Chris Goldhawk and Bob Taylor of the Class Association made the long journey from 'somewhere in England' to support the event organised by our de facto Solo captain - Graham Wellman. The event attracted 16 enthusiasts from Corus SC, Llangorse SC, Tenby SC and, of course, the local Solo Boys. The programme said 'on the beach rigged by 9.30' and they spent the morning being coached on the water, until, as in any spell of fine weather here, the wind fell away. They spent a windless afternoon practising rigging and tuning on the beach. In between these sessions, Graham took the opportunity to commission our new 'Wellman Wing' and with the aid of 'Linda and friend' produce a worthy repast for entrants and patrol boat crew. All in all, an enjoyable day and a welcome boost to the interest in the Solo class at Saundersfoot SC.

Abandoned boats

There are a number (far too many) of boats in our Dinghy Park which have been abandoned by their owners - they occupy precious space and contribute nothing. Very shortly, the club intends to exercise its legal right to dispose of the offending boats, so if you suddenly realise that one of these boats is yours, then please contact the club without delay. Club Racing

Paul Johnson very kindly stood in as officer-of-the- day on Sunday in place of Ancient Mariner who was recovering from a chest infection, stuffed full of antibiotics and fragile. For both races, breeze was plentiful and a course of Pendine- Monkstone- Harbour produced a taxing beat from Monkstone to the Harbour mark. Both races produced an identical finishing order as follows: 1. Paul Griffiths (Laser); 2. Alan Lambert (Solo); 3. Nick Berridge (Osprey); 4. Trevor Smith (Graduate) on his first outing for the year. After a slow start to the season, here's hoping for some decent wind - with only six weeks to go to Coppet Week, they need all the practice they can get.
