With the weather we have been having, you could be forgiven for thinking that racing would not take place, but as Saturday arrived, conditions were good. Trevor and I ran the race, but opted for the cosier option of using the OOD box on the wall, instead of taking to the water. The wind was westerly Force 2 and marks were laid for a small, starboard course of PMH x 4 and the countdown got underway. For some unknown reason, the three-minute start sequence caused confusion this week and with one minute to go, the racers started - a case of follow the leader, I think! As the dinghies got underway together and because of a falling tide, the error was overlooked and race times adjusted accordingly. Alan led the fleet in his Solo with lap times between 8.01 and 8.34 minutes, completing three laps under the shortened course flag. The final 1, 2, 3, 4 was Alan in Solo, Paul in OK, Graham in Solo, Jim in Topper. For race-two, the course was changed to MPH x 4. Despite a reminder to the fleet that the start sequence was three minutes, they still didn't get it right, so this time were called back with a general recall. Another reminder and it seemed to have an effect, a correct three-minute start sequence was carried out and the fleet got off to a good start. It was sometimes squally 4-5, but the fleet managed well, with lap times a little slower than before. Alan, however, briefly lost concentration near the harbour, but was unperturbed at testing the water's temperature! After handicaps were applied, the 1, 2, 3, 4 line-up differed slightly: 1. Alan; 2. Graham; 3. Paul; 4. Jim. Well done all, thanks to Martin and Tom for taking a patrol boat out, and to Trevor for officiating 'in the box', all much appreciated. Unfortunately, there were some 'apologies for absence' due to ill health or family commitments and we hope these sailors will be back with us again for the next race on Saturday, November 25. After lunch, the club was very pleased to be presented with a cheque from Westminster Bank. Many thanks. LANDLUBBER

Close at the mark.
