Quiz Night
There was an excellent turnout for the quiz night on February 24. Once again Rolfe John demonstrated his ability to construct a nicely balanced quiz to which all could contribute while reminding the eggheads that they are mortal and fallible. One section of the quiz was a timely reminder that we talk acronyms all day long without much idea of what they stand for - NASA?, SCUBA?, HIV?. Ancient Mariner fielded a strongly fancied team, which fell apart at the question 'what four word phrase is the origin of 'goodbye' - the answer was 'God Be With Ye' not 'Ta Ta For Now' as suggested by one team member now on gardening leave. Unable to recover concentration, Ancient Mariner et al were pipped at the post by a scratch team of dark horses ably led by club secretary Sue Groves, a team which knew the odd one out in a list of film directors, if you please. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
Future Events
Games Night, tonight (Friday), 7.30 pm: As we approach the end of a very successful winter social programme, this event will test members' skill at pool, darts, skittles and dominoes. Attendance is obligatory for all members with a tendency to stand on their dignity. It is a fine character-building experience. Beetle Drive, March 24, 7.30 pm: By popular request, the penultimate event in the 2005/6 social programme will be a repeat of the Beetle Drive experience. Novices at the last event have acknowledged that it is quite impossible to remain aloof. Those who do are quickly reminded of the error of their ways by fellow team members, and as in other walks of life, none is more intense than the convert. As a play-within-a-play, 'Hamlet' has nothing to compare with the adrenaline rush of this deceptive pastime. Fitting Out Supper, April 1: And so to the final social event - the ceremony which marks the end of biting north winds and endless days of grey drizzle. It is the sailing club's annual triumph of hope over experience. Watch this space for further details.
Sail Training - Call for Volunteers
Saundersfoot Sailing Club is the only RYA- recognised Training Scheme in the locality. It performs a valuable social function in introducing adults as well as children to the sense of achievement to be gained from challenging the elements competently. Like all good things, it does not happen of its own volition. It happens through the efforts of our trainers - their willingness to devote their time to acquiring the essential qualifications and to imparting that knowledge and skill. They deserve our fullest support and there are many ways in which they can be supported without necessarily going in at the deep end, so to speak. If you wish further information on how you can help, please contact our sail training principal Malcolm Williams.
Thought for Today
Would you believe it - annual subscriptions were due on January 1 and there are still defaulters. We know who they are - they advertise their presence when, lacking the magic numbers, they ring the bell to get into the clubhouse. Most vulnerable are the defaulters with spaces reserved in the dinghy or tender parks. The sailing and membership secretaries are tearing their hair out trying to allocate (X + Y) boats into X spaces and they cannot wait forever. And another thing - as advertised, the price of entry to the ever-popular Coppet Week Regatta goes up for late entries as from March 31. There is a useful Arab proverb applicable here and to much else besides - 'take what you want in this life and pay for it'.
