SAIL TRAINING
Tomorrow (Saturday), improvers etc. will be from 9 - 11 am and beginners from 11 am - 1 pm.
SUNDAY RACING
Last Sunday there was a brisk gusty wind out in the bay and 15 sailors in 12 dinghies headed for the water for the Royal Marines races 1 and 2.
Taking advice from sailors on the water, the course was set at AMH x 3 and racing got underway. The Fireball completed the first lap in 19.58 minutes and was able to sail the full three laps, along with the 505, while the rest of the fleet had a shortened course so they finished after two laps and the Optimist completed one circuit.
Nick J. in his Contender found the going pretty tough and retired during his second lap because he was 'very tired'!
Trevor decided to have a go in Simon's Byte, but found it necessary to retire during the first lap; I suspect he missed the stability and the crew of the Graduate. Graham, who has only recently started sailing his Solo, finished after one lap having sailed well and gained valuable experience.
Adam in his Optimist gets better every week and, although his placing would not normally get a mention, I must tell you that he took fifth place.
Alistair used his Radial sail this week and handled it very well, gaining third place. Andrew in his Laser gained second place - he is a close contender for first place most weeks, if he could just keep his rear end out of the water!
In first place were John and Paul in their Fireball. What can I say, they always sail well and they usually win, perhaps someone else should set up the course at the start of the season!
For race 2 of the day the course was changed to MAH x 3 with a diminished fleet of 11 sailors in eight dinghies.
A Topper and Comet Duo retired after the start, leaving six dinghies to complete the race. The Fireball and 505 did three laps and the rest of the fleet finished after two laps. The final results were the same as for race one and it was interesting to note that between second and sixth place there was only 65 seconds difference.
Well done everyone who took to the water.
This Sunday there will be the Royal Marines race 3 that starts at 10 am - we look forward to seeing everyone bright and early, especially patrol crews and race officers who should arrive one hour before the scheduled start time.
