Work in Saundersfoot that supports sports training for disability groups has been praised by a local county councillor.

Recently, county councillor for the village’s south ward Cllr Chris Williams said that he was invited by Saundersfoot Rotary Club to attend their monthly get together of the Tenderfoot group which supports sports training for disability groups based at the Regency Hall.

Tenderfoot led by Rotarian, Charles Hopkinson has been active for many years, with Saundersfoot Rotary the only Rotarian group that delivers the training and coaching for the participants that attend.

Tenderfoot, currently have 28 attendees who participate in a number of sports including rowing, basketball, target golf, table tennis, boccia and pool.

Back in November, the Tenderfoot Team were once again crowned champions at the Welsh Disabled Sports Team Championships held in Cardiff for the eighth time in the last thirteen years.

All ages are welcomed to Tenderfoot and although Saundersfoot based, Tenderfoot welcome participants from other areas of Pembrokeshire. Those attending are trained once a month.

“I was delighted to attend and see the excellent work going on in our community and what they’re achieving locally,” said Cllr Williams.

“We believe the provision of disability training promotes Saundersfoot as a friendly and inclusive community in the best possible way.

Rotary fundraising has enabled the purchase of the equipment and also finances the end of year travel and accommodation to the Team Games in Cardiff, as well as supporting a Christmas Party for the athletes and their carers.

“The ongoing costs to Rotary are in the region of £1,600 a year although kit and equipment will need updating and renewing over time and it would be nice to add to the equipment,” continued Cllr Williams

“It is becoming more expensive as membership grows. Rotary, of course, provide their services free of charge and there is no cost for attendees other than associated care costs for other agencies.

“Rotary remain committed to Tenderfoot which contributes to community cohesion and the development of members of our community through the medium of sport.

“I strongly believe that Tenderfoot will go from strength to strength and I fully support the incredible work by the volunteers and the team of Rotarians who are doing an incredible job in arranging as many activities as possible for a wide ranging amount of disability groups,” he added.

Anyone who would like to offer support, are encouraged to approach Saundersfoot Rotary Club directly.
