This term, Year 5 pupils from Saundersfoot CP School have been exploring Shakespeare.

They began by studying some history of the man and then reading two plays, Twelfth Night and Macbeth.

The children visited Stratford-Upon-Avon, early in October, where they watched a performance of Twelfth Night at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Many adults in the theatre commented on how impressed they were by children's knowledge of the play and their exemplary behaviour.

The following day, they had guided tours of the town and Shakespeare houses which included watching an archaeological dig at New Place. History was coming to life. They also took the opportunity to rehearse some scenes from Macbeth in the gardens of Halls Croft and in the mini amphitheatre in Bancroft Gardens in front of curious tourists - Saundersfoot pupils can say they performed Shakespeare to the public in Stratford!

Their work culminated in a performance of an abridged version of Macbeth at the Torch Theatre, Milford Haven, as part of the Shakespeare Schools' Festival.

Although abridged, these nine and 10-year-olds had to learn significant pieces of Shakespearian text which they delivered with skill.

The evening was a sell out and their parents and teachers were bursting with pride.

A huge thanks to everyone who took part (both on stage and behind the scenes) and particular thanks from staff, pupils and parents to Mrs. Lloyd and Miss Nicholson, the teachers at Saundersfoot CP School, who co-ordinated and made it all happen.
