Councillors in Saundersfoot are mulling over the responses and feedback from a comprehensive parking survey carried out for the seaside village.

Over recent years, County Councillors Chris Williams and Alec Cormack along with Saundersfoot Community Council members have become increasingly aware of the ongoing concerns raised by residents regarding parking within the village.

During the summer months, this issue has become particularly prominent, especially during periods of good weather and peak visitor numbers.

“Throughout this summer, we have actively engaged with many residents, business owners, and visitors to better understand their views,” said Cllr Williams.

“As part of this work, we developed and circulated a parking survey to gather feedback and identify key areas of concern.

“While we recognise that not all issues can be resolved immediately, this consultation provides valuable insight into local parking challenges and forms a strong basis for future discussions and planning.”

Responses received, covered multiple roads throughout the village. The most common types of problems identified included pavement blocking, vehicles obstructing the road, blocked driveways, parking on yellow lines, and delivery vehicles creating access issues.

Many commented that parking problems intensify significantly during large events, bank holidays, and the summer season.

Some suggested the introduction of a park and ride system during peak months.

Another key concern raised was the ongoing tension between residents and those working in the village. Many residents, particularly in Whitlow, reported that local workers regularly park for long periods on residential streets.

Several respondents also raised concerns about the high cost of parking and frustrations with the automated parking systems around the village. This has led some drivers to seek free roadside parking where restrictions are limited or unclear, further increasing pressure on residential streets.

A wide range of potential improvements were suggested, with some proposing the development of a fairer parking permit system for both residents and workers, stronger enforcement of existing parking restrictions, and consideration of additional parking capacity, including options for a multi-storey car park.

“The findings from this consultation confirm that parking remains a significant concern for residents across Saundersfoot,” continued Cllr Williams.

“The most problematic areas identified were Whitlow, Castle View, and The Strand, with pavement obstruction and road blockage being the most frequent issues raised.

“Seasonal pressures, large events, high parking charges at some locations and limited enforcement, have all contributed to the worsening of these problems.

“Residents have made it clear that while long-term investment in parking infrastructure will be required, stronger enforcement of current parking restrictions is equally important in the short term.

“This consultation provides a valuable evidence base for continued discussions with Pembrokeshire County Council and key stakeholders as we work towards developing sustainable and fair parking solutions that balance the needs of residents, businesses, and visitors while preserving the welcoming character and accessibility of Saundersfoot.

“Councillor Cormack and I have a meeting planned with PCC’s Public Realm Manager and highways to discuss points raised and try to look at all options raised,” added Cllr Williams.
