Hebron Baptist Church

On Remembrance Sunday, Mr. Anthony Standing gave the announcements and a warm welcome to the congregation. Being the centenary of the Crusader youth movement, Mr. Standing, who has been a Crusader for over 50 years, spoke about the 10,000 leaders and young people who joined the armed forces in the first and second world wars. Some 900 gave their lives for the freedom of others. The two minutes silence was observed, then Mr. Standing led the congregation in prayer for those who lost their lives in conflict and those who are fighting for freedom today. The families of these brave men and women were also remembered. Miss Helen Standing was the pianist and Mr. and Mrs. Kaye were the welcome stewards. The reading selected by the speaker, Rev. Dr. David Pusey, was from John 10 v 1-18. Rev Pusey said that we remember those who died so that we might have peace. Some did as they were told, while others had no choice. Civilians lost their lives, too, in the bombing. Their deaths and our lives are linked. Our freedom of choice today is only because of the sacrifice of previous generations. Today, across the world, men and women are still giving their lives. In so far as war is still with us in the world, we might ask, 'Was there ever really a victory?' Evil flourishes when good men keep quiet. Nobody took Jesus' life, he gave it up willingly, knowing the pain of sacrifice on the cross, for the reconciliation of God and man. God cares so much that he sacrificed his own son to give us life. When a landline is cut off, contact is lost until an engineer comes to sort it out. Likewise, man has become separated from God, but he sent Jesus to reconnect us. It is the only everlasting lifeline. This Sunday, the Gideons will be leading the service. The young people will have their own activity during the message. Crusader Tuesday Club meets at 6 pm. Bible Study is on Thursday at 7.30 pm. INNER WHEEL CLUB

President Viv Williams welcomed members to the November meeting held at the St. Brides Spa Hotel, Saundersfoot. She said it had been a very busy month for her as she had acted as a judge for the annual Youth Speaks competition held at Greenhill School, helped with the Rotary Antiques Fair in Saundersfoot, attended the Inner Wheel District Rally and joined Rotary members and local youth in Newport at the Rotary Annual Sports for the Disabled. However, she said she had thoroughly enjoyed all of it and it had been a very rewarding experience where she had, in each case, made new friends. She would also be laying a wreath at the War Memorial at St. Issell's Church on Remembrance Sunday on behalf of the club. New honorary member, Pam Harley, was welcomed into the club with a letter from association president, Phil Fennelly, and Rotary Shoe Boxes were distributed to members to be filled with goodies for Christmas distribution. The talk for the evening was a 'Musical Travelogue' on Prague, very ably given, for members' information and enjoyment, by Alan Jones, a member of the Rotary Club. He took his audience through the history of Prague, from its inception to the present very beautiful city with its large castle, cathedral, Jewish quarter, old town, famous Charles Bridge and clock. The next meeting will be held at the St. Brides Spa Hotel on December 7.
