A new footway in Saundersfoot has proved overwhelmingly popular with residents and visitors alike.

The path, which aims to provide a safe link for pedestrians between the residential areas of Cwm Gwennol and Rhodewood House, with additional improvements added to The Glen, was officially opened at the end of June.

The Pembrokeshire County Council scheme was carried out by contractors Evan Pritchard Ltd and received funding from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund.

Data already shows that the footway is being used by hundreds of pedestrians and a number of cyclists every week and is especially welcomed by walkers with buggies or less able users in wheelchairs and scooters.

Clr. Phil Baker said: “The new footway is a very welcome addition to the walking routes in and around Saundersfoot and is truly an example of cooperation between all parties.

“This was a very important missing section and now allows walkers to travel in safety from Saundersfoot to New Hedges. I look forward to seeing the footway in full use through the summer and during Long Course and Ironman events.

“The County Council Engineers have worked hard to design the path taking on board the winding nature of the road, the existing slopes and environmental aspects.

“I was delighted that former Community Councillor Mrs Mary Cavell was able to cut the ribbon, as we had both been pressing for this link for a number of years”

The project required additional highway area to allow the improvements to take place, with both the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Hean Castle Estate and St Brides Spa Hotel dedicating the necessary land to enable the footway to be constructed.
