June 16, 2003, should have been the 100th birthday of Albert Howells OBE, of Saundersfoot, who died on December 27, 1998 (Obituary, Observer, January 1, 1999).
Albert Howells was a most distinguished pharmacist whose contributions to his profession - both at national and international level - which spanned a period of over half-a-century, are too numerous to mention here.
One of his greatest achievements was the successful formation of the Commonwealth Pharmaceutical Association (CPA), which has become a powerful voice in world pharmacy.
On his retirement from the position of founder president in 1982, after more than 12 years at the helm, the association designated his birthday - June 16 - Commonwealth Pharmacy Day. It is celebrated in Commonwealth countries with special events and professional activities designed to promote pharmacy to other health professions, Government departments and to the public.
As reported previously in the Observer (June 25, 1993), the CPHA had marked the 90th birthday of its founder president with the establishment of an award in his name. The Albert Howells Award is presented to pharmacists who have made outstanding contributions to their profession at Commonwealth level.
On June 16, i.e. on Commonwealth Pharmacy Day, a message from the current president of CPA, Mr. John Bell, of Australia, can be viewed on http://www.rpsgh.org.uk/international/index.html">www.rpsgh.org.uk/international/index.html
