With work now underway to get Wales ready for the change to lower the default national speed limit on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets from 30 mph to 20 mph, county councillors from Saundersfoot have had their say on matters concerning the village.

The Senedd voted in favour in July this year for the switch, meaning Wales became the first UK nation to pass the legislation, with the new speed limit coming into force on September 17, 2023.

In a report to Saundersfoot Community Council this month, Cllr Alec Cormack told members that he and fellow county councillor for the village Cllr Chris Williams were able to comment on proposals for their wards.

“Plans were produced in November showing the roads that will be switched from 30 mph to 20 mph in September 2023.

“Within Saundersfoot North there was just a single stretch of current 30 mph road which was proposed to remain unchanged with all other areas being reduced to 20 mph,” which was a section of Station Road, Cllr Cormack explained, stating that both he and Cllr Williams recommended that the stretch should be reduced to 20 mph.

“We pointed out that a new housing development is planned to take place at that exact location. Additionally, slowing traffic down at that point was essential to ensure that vehicles had reduced their speed prior to reaching the school on Frances Lane.

“When we hear back from Highways we will provide an update,” he added.

Concerns were once again flagged-up with regards to vehicles speeding along the Ridgeway and Sandyhill Road, with members requesting that the clerk write to Pembrokeshire County Council’s highways department once again, asking for a site meeting with Councillors to ascertain where and what traffic calming measures could be installed.

A number of photographs and several emails, raising concerns, had also been received by the Clerk, who was asked to collect any evidence of vehicles speeding or parking inappropriately in the areas to document.
